Cocktails at Home with Marc: The Devil’s Margarita

I know what you're thinking. How many episodes of Tiger King can I actually watch before I give myself a mullet? How many of my kid's common core math problems do I have to help them with before my brain explodes? Can I still have fun while locked up in my house with nothing to do? Can we really make something new and fun to drink with simple ingredients while being in quarantine?

The answer is yes, and I'm gonna show you how. In a few short steps, you can have yourself a wicked margarita that'll get you ready for warmer weather and for all of our COVID-19 worries pass.

I'll be the first to tell you this isn't my idea, but I'm happy to share it with you because it's a fun, simple cocktail that I think everyone can enjoy.

It's called a Devil's Margarita... and it goes a little something like this:

Ingredients: They are about as simple as it gets. You'll need tequila, 1.5 oz to be precise. Now if you've been to the shop and you've talked to me, you know there's one tequila I'll always mention... La Gritona. It works for everything; you can drink it straight, on the rocks, or definitely in a cocktail (which is how we'll use it here).

You'll need 3/4 oz lime juice--the fresher the better, but don't be afraid to use a high-quality bottled Lime Juice! Remember: we're having fun--not making it harder on ourselves.

You'll need simple syrup, 3/4 oz here as well. We carry this at the shop--I recommend Powell & Mahoney.

Now if you're not leaving the house and you're fully committed to making this cocktail, do not worry. The only thing you need to make simple syrup at home is hot water and sugar in equal parts (1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water). Stir the sugar into the hot water until it becomes clear again, then remove it from the heat.

The final ingredient you'll need is red wine. I recommend a nice dry red. My choices would be Altos Malbec or Bacchus Cabernet Sauvignon. You'll only need 1/4 oz at most, which is perfect for when you have just a little red wine left but hate to see it go to waste.

Combine the tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup over ice and shake it like a "Polaroid pitchya".

Once you've poured the combined ingredients into a proper margarita glass (which I have not, I'm sorry) take a tablespoon or barspoon, turn it backward, and gently pour red wine over the back of the spoon so it gently lays itself on top of the rest of your ingredients. Pro tip: the more gentle the wine pour, the better the layering of the cocktail will be.

There you have it. A fun spin to a traditional cocktail with super simple ingredients. I hope you're all well and don't forget... Stay the fuck home!

Cheers,
Marc
