Located on Bell Road in Amador County, Judge Bell is like traveling back to the wild west, Gold Rush Era California. The name comes from the eponymous (and notorious) "hanging" Judge Bell, who presided over the nearby town of Plymouth during its Gold Rush heyday. The vines are over 100 years old, having been planted in 1907 on classically Sierra Foothills granite soil, and are farmed organically. Due to its mountain-tannin structure, this wine shows to be beautifully ageable, if one has the patience for it.
Aromatically the wine is herbaceous with notes of Provencal herbs, mint, and rosemary alongside tight dark fruits. On the palate, the fruit is deliciously ripe with layered, fine-grained tannins and notes of dust from the old vines which they hail.
