Wine Wednesdays with Adam: The Surprises of Portugal

Welcome to the second installment of Wine Wednesdays with Adam! Each week we'll be exploring my favorite wines and what makes them stand out from the crowd. This week's wines: The Surprises of Portugal.

Portugal is putting out more than just, well... port. In fact, there are many grape varieties from Portugal that do not grow anywhere else in the world! This makes for some tasty wines at a great value. Here are some of my favorites:

Colossal Reserva

 Medium Red Wine

A big wine for a small price, this Portuguese red blend is rich, silky, and full of blackberry and spice. Pair it with spiced chicken, BBQ, or a nice wedge of drunken goat cheese with blackberry jam.

$10.99

Fonseca Jose de Sousa

 Medium Red Wine

This medium red comes from Jose Maria da Fonseca--the oldest wine company in Portugal. Dark red in color, this wine offers aromas of dates, plums, toasted bread, cloves, oak, vanilla and chocolate. On the palate, it shows good fruit, good acidity, and soft tannins. Goes great with gamey meats and mushroomy cheese.

$14.99

Quinta do Portal Colheita Tinto

 Medium Red Wine

This elegant wine has the perfect balance of red fruits and acidity with layers of wood aging. It will age well, giving an always structured, stylish wine. Pairs nicely with beef, pasta, & lamb.

$16.99

Grand Arte Alvarinho

 Light White Wine

Not a far jump from a pinot grigio, this brightly-acidic and balanced Portuguese white wine is of dry; carrying notes of melon, apple, and citrus. Pair it with a spring salad from The Market for a nice evening!

$10.99
